Fire Sprinkler System Design Standards & Head Selection under IS 15105

Key Technical Takeaways

  • βœ“Automatic sprinklers respond independently to localized thermal thresholds, minimizing water usage and stopping flashover.
  • βœ“Selection of bulb activation temperatures: 68Β°C (Red Bulb) for normal ambient up to 93Β°C (Green) or 141Β°C (Blue) for boiler rooms.
  • βœ“ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) heads with K-factor 14.0–25.2 eliminate in-rack piping requirements in modern warehouses.
  • βœ“Alarm Check Valve (ACV) mechanically triggers a water motor gong alarm upon any single sprinkler activation.

1. Working Principle & Bulb Color Code Standards

Unlike movie portrayals where all sprinklers trigger simultaneously, automatic fire sprinkler systems operate on independent thermal triggers. Only the specific sprinkler head directly exposed to convective fire heat activates.

The trigger is a hermetically sealed glass quartzoid bulb containing a temperature-sensitive thermo-expansive liquid. Upon reaching the calibrated activation temperature, the internal liquid expands, bursts the glass bulb, releases the pip plug, and distributes a high-density water umbrella.

2. Occupancy Hazard Classification (IS 15105)

Under IS 15105, facilities are classified into 4 hazard categories determining water density (mm/min) and design area (mΒ²):

1. Light Hazard: Schools, hospitals, hotels, and offices (2.25 mm/min over 84 mΒ²).

2. Ordinary Hazard (Groups I, II, III): General manufacturing, textile mills, and consumer goods factories (5.0 mm/min over 216–360 mΒ²).

3. High Hazard Process: Chemical manufacturing, paint blending, and foam rubber production (7.5 to 12.5 mm/min).

4. High Hazard Storage: High-rack palletized storage warehouses exceeding 4.5m stacking height.

3. ESFR Sprinklers for High-Bay Warehousing

For modern logistics parks and distribution warehouses along the Jammu–Pathankot highway (NH44), BSS Fire engineers ceiling-mounted Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) sprinkler heads. Featuring large discharge orifices (K-factor 14.0 to 25.2), ESFR sprinklers penetrate high-velocity thermal plumes and suppress core rack fires without requiring expensive in-rack piping.

4. Hydraulic Pipe Sizing & Alarm Valve Station

Sprinkler pipe distribution is hydraulically calculated using the Hazen-Williams formula to eliminate excessive friction loss. Each zone is controlled by a dedicated Alarm Check Valve (ACV) with a water motor gong and integrated electrical flow switch that transmits instant alarm signals to the central FACP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an automatic sprinkler be triggered accidentally by smoke or dust?

No. Standard fire sprinklers are purely thermally activated and cannot be triggered by smoke, dust, cooking vapors, or loud sounds. The glass bulb requires genuine direct heat to reach its calibrated bursting temperature.
